About schools in Wales

Schools in Wales follow the Curriculum for Wales and are inspected by Estyn, the country's own inspectorate. Admissions are handled by each council rather than one national service, so the timetable and the way places are offered differ from one authority to the next. Most children are offered their catchment school, and families can apply elsewhere where there is room. Many schools teach wholly or partly through the medium of Welsh, and a school's page notes its language category where the register records it.

To read an Estyn report with confidence, start with our guide to understanding Estyn inspections, which explains how the graded era before 2022 differs from the narrative reports Estyn writes now. For how and when to apply for a place, see school admissions and key dates.

How we present schools in Wales

Estyn is the inspectorate for schools in Wales. We show each school's latest Estyn inspection date and report type and link straight to the report on Estyn. Estyn stopped giving summative grades to maintained schools in 2022 and now reports in narrative form, so we never turn an inspection into a single grade, and we never compare an Estyn outcome with an Ofsted or Education Scotland one.

Wales does not publish school-level exam results under an open licence, so our school pages show the characteristics the Welsh Government does publish, such as free school meal eligibility and English as an additional language, rather than attainment tables. Our data and methodology guide lists every source and how each one is used.

School details come from the Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register and the Welsh Government's address list of schools. Inspection information comes from Estyn.
