About schools in Scotland
Schools in Scotland follow the Curriculum for Excellence and are inspected by Education Scotland, whose inspectors weigh a school against the How Good Is Our School quality indicators. Places are organised around catchment areas: most pupils attend the school for their home address, and parents can make a placing request to another school when they would prefer it and there is room. Councils run the schools day to day, which is why this page and the ones below speak of council areas.
Our guide to understanding school inspections in Scotland explains the six-point scale and what inspectors look at. For how placing requests work and when to make one, see school admissions and key dates.

How we present schools in Scotland
Education Scotland (HM Inspectors) inspects schools in Scotland against the How Good Is Our School quality indicators. We show each school's latest inspection date and report type and link straight to the report, without turning it into a single grade, and we never compare an Education Scotland outcome with an Ofsted or Estyn one.
Scotland does not publish school-level exam results under an open licence, so our school pages show the characteristics the Scottish Government does publish, such as pupil roll, the pupil-teacher ratio and home-area deprivation, rather than attainment tables. Our data and methodology guide lists every source and how each one is used.
School details come from the Scottish Government's school contact list. Inspection information comes from Education Scotland.
