Ofsted inspection outcomes across England

Across the 8,747 schools in England whose most recent overall Ofsted grade is a single word from the framework used before November 2025, 89.6% are rated Good or Outstanding. A further 1,989 schools have since been inspected under the new report cards, which do not give one overall grade.

How the grades divide

Each bar shows the share of the 8,747 graded schools that sit at each grade. These are ordinal grades from a single framework in one nation, not a score, and they are never set against an Estyn or Education Scotland judgement.

  • Outstanding 1,070 schools (12.2%)
  • Good 6,770 schools (77.4%)
  • Requires improvement 770 schools (8.8%)
  • Inadequate 137 schools (1.6%)

How to read these grades

Ofsted stopped giving schools one overall word in November 2025. A school inspected since then receives a report card that grades several areas of school life on their own, so it has no single headline grade and is counted separately above. The grades in the chart are the last single word each of the other schools received, and they stand until the school is inspected again. Read every grade with its date: a judgement from a few years ago describes the school as it was then.

A short (ungraded) inspection can confirm that a school remains Good or Outstanding without changing its grade, so its earlier word still stands. Our guide to how Ofsted report cards work explains the five-point report card scale and how it sits alongside the older judgements. To see a school's full inspection history with every date and framework, open its page from the England home page or search by name.
